Newcastle's Paddle Steamer William the Fourth
Soon to be plying the waters of Newcastle Harbour will be William the Fourth - a replica of the first steam driven ocean going paddle steamer built in Australia. The original ship (painting by Gary Winter) and her sister paddle steamers of 1831 heralded a transport and industrial revolution in Australia.
The first William the Fourth was built in 1831 in Clarence Town, on the Williams River, not far from the already bustling port of Newcastle. The colony of New South Wales was just 44 years old when the vessel began the 30 years of reliable service in the coastal trade which has made her an Australian legend.
Volunteers and contributors are now needed to complete restoration work before she is open to the public and sails again. If you can help, please phone 61 2 49261117. Email William IV
