Port of Brisbane - diversity, resilience and leadership
The Port of Brisbane is Australia’s third busiest container port and Queensland’s largest general cargo port. A key driver of economic growth throughout the South East Queensland region, the port is managed by the Port of Brisbane Corporation (PBC).
With world-class cargo handing facilities and warehousing, the port handles a diversity of commodities, including containers, motor vehicles, dry bulk, wet bulk and break bulk. In 2008/2009, total trade tonnage reached 31.9 million tonnes, and the port handed 896,199 teus.*
Developed since 1976 on a greenfield site at the mouth of the Brisbane River, the Port of Brisbane is a modern, purpose-built 750-hectare facility, just 24 kilometres from Brisbane’s CBD. Over the past 20 years, $1.5 billion has been invested in infrastructure and assets, and PBC plans to spend another $950 million over the next five years.
One of PBC’s current infrastructure projects is the construction of two new container berths for Hutchinson Port Holdings, a global stevedoring company. The first berth will be completed in 2012 with the second due by 2014. The arrival of HPH makes Brisbane the first port in Australia to introduce a third stevedoring operation. DP World and Patrick operate container terminals with 900m of quayline each, and Patrick’s Autostrad® Terminal is a world first, operating with 23 robot-controlled straddle carriers.
Land reclamation of the Future Port Expansion (FPE), an area of 230 hectares enclosed by a 4.6 kilometre rock seawall, will continue for next 10 to 15 years. The FPE will cater for the future growth of the port, and an innovative engineering technique using wick drains is being used in this area to speed up the ground consolidation process.
Sustainability is core to PBC’s long-term business goals. To attract and sustain increased business opportunities, PBC takes a leading role in protecting the port’s surrounding environment, looking after its people and contributing to the community in which it operates.
The principles of sustainability also drive development on port land. PBC’s development code incorporates a mandatory clause for all buildings constructed within the Port Central business district to achieve a 5 Star Green Star design rating from the Green Building Council of Australia. PBC is close to completing its third 5 Star Green Star office building. This new headquarters for PBC staff, is the first in Australia to be awarded a 5 Star Green Star – Office Design v3 Certified Rating.
