Encyclopedia of Exploration
Encyclopedia of Exploration has established itself as a unique and definitive work of reference. The first volume covers the period to 1800, while the second volume continues the history of exploration, travel and colonization through the following fifty years. The third and fourth volumes both cover the period 1850 to 1940, with the third covering the oceans, islands and polar regions. The fourth and final part, now published, covers the same period, but completes the work by detailing continental and land exploration.
Over fifteen years in the making, the Encyclopedia of Exploration has been a massive undertaking. The four volumes include over 4500 articles in approximately 3660 pages, some 3.7 million words. Within the text itself there are many thousands of cross-references between articles, and the work is made even more accessible through extensive bibliographical citations to accompany the articles.
