Clipper Ship City of Adelaide
If you would like to help save the world heritage City of Adelaide clipper ship, go to the petition webpage and add your name. This clipper is of extraordinary heritage importance to Australia with respect to 19th century migration to Australia, Australian trade, Australian nation building, and the relationship between Britain and the Australian colonies.
The Convenor of the Save the City of Adelaide Action Group, Peter Christopher, says the ship represents the foundation era of Australian maritime, economic and social history. The 1864 clipper ship City of Adelaide is the oldest surviving clipper ship in the world being five years older than the Cutty Sark. - The only surviving sailing ship that gave regular passenger and cargo service between Europe and Australia. One of only two surviving composite clipper ships in the world - the other is the Cutty Sark (if she survives the aftermath of her fire).
She was built for the sole purpose of bringing immigrants to South Australia and taking Australian goods (e.g. Wool, wheat and copper) to the London markets. The owners of the Scottish slipway where she currently sits want her removed and, as a consequence, the UK authorities plan to 'deconstruct' her.
The City of Adelaide now needs to be brought back to Australia as she is a unique part of our heritage. More information at City of Adelaide
