Experience Living Heritage - Port Kembla Heritage Park

Step into the past, present and future at Port Kembla Heritage Park. Located adjacent to the Eastern Breakwater of Port Kembla Outer Harbour, the heritage park precinct has been and remains an observer of the development of the region from aboriginal times through to the present and into the future. Overlooking the working port of Port Kembla, the park incorporates Maritime, Military and Aboriginal Heritage that all belong on the site.

The Aboriginal Middens on the site are being linked by a new Aboriginal trail connecting them with other important Aboriginal sites nearby. The Breakwater Battery building represents military heritage, and gun emplacements; that were key structures of the command centre for Fortress Kembla during World War II. The Pilots and Signal Station represent maritime heritage, with an interpretive exhibit to be completed by mid year. The Signal Station was last used to control Port Kembla Harbour in 2002 and now being prepared to house interpretive exhibits. It also overlooks the working Port of Port Kembla and surrounding industry and at some future date will overlook Energetic’s Wave Generator, transforming wave energy to electricity and producing fresh water.

A self-guided Heritage Trail with explanatory signage is accessible 7 days per week with a brochure guide available from Tourist Centres at Wollongong, Shellharbour and Kiama or by contacting us directly. A Military Museum in the Breakwater Battery Building is open for inspection on the second and 4th Sundays of the month from 10am – 2pm. Group and guided tours of the site and facilities are available by arrangement.

Location: Foreshore Drive Port Kembla. From the F6 freeway from north or south, take the Five Islands Road Exit and follow the signs to the Outer Harbour. Click here for regional map.
