Brigantine Tall Ship One & All - Youth Development Sail Training

South Australia’s Brigantine tall ship, One & All, has celebrated two decades of helping SA’s youth through its sail training voyages.

The One & All has been instrumental in youth development in this state and beyond, with its unique voyages where trainees learn basic sailing skills and social skills by operating a traditionally rigged sailing ship.

Trainees learn to work together in an isolated environment where the objective is personal development with enjoyment. The shipboard environment contributes to personal development as trainees learn the importance of teamwork and problem-solving. The trainees ultimately gain the confidence to work the ship together which provides them with a great sense of satisfaction and achievement.

The One & All was the fulfilment of a dream for a dedicated group of South Australians who had been working for years to have a wooden sail training ship operating from the State.

She was officially launched in 1985 and one of her first major events was the First Fleet Re-enactment at Rio de Janeiro in 1987. Founding President of the One & All, Sir James Hardy OBE, says the completion of the One & All was just the start.

"The reason for building One & All was to provide the community with a vessel for sail training and to provide a unique youth development program for South Australia," Sir James says.

"Working as a team on a ship under all conditions makes better people out of all of us and that can only have long term benefits for the rest of the community. The building of the One & All was a labour of love for all of us and the last twenty years has provided our youth with a unique environment from which to learn the skills of life."

The One & All is operated by SA Tall Ships Inc for and on behalf of the people of South Australia and is a non-profit organization.
