Honeysuckle - Always Happening
Take in the sights and sounds of the harbour with a walk along the Foreshore Promenade, enjoy the activity over a coffee in Harbour Square, stop for a fresh seafood lunch at the marina or explore the mangrove boardwalk from Linwood.
The Honeysuckle project is transforming 50 hectares of derelict land along Newcastle harbour, adjacent to the CBD, into a vibrant place for people to live, work and relax. It was initiated to assist in revitalising Newcastle’s CBD and is one of the largest urban renewal projects in Australia.
Hunter Development Corporation is a NSW State Government organisation established to manage the project. Honeysuckle commenced in 1992, through a $100 million investment by the Federal and State Governments under the Building Better Cities program, which was an innovative approach to improve the quality of Australian cities.
The Corporation’s major role is to create jobs, stimulate investment and attract people to the region. The initial $100 million funded several major community projects and laid the foundation for private-sector development projects.
Around $700 million worth of projects are complete or underway including a marina, townhouses and apartments, cafés and restaurants, hotels and a Maritime Centre.
As development continues so too will public space including a Foreshore Promenade around the harbour. It will link up with pocket parks, robust urban spaces and truly redefine Newcastle as a city with a lively urban waterfront. Honeysuckle is creating a vibrant place for people by the harbour.
