Picture Australia: One simple search . . many amazing collections
Picture Australia is pleased to announce some exciting new additions to its vast pool of online images. Now you can find even more rich pictorial resources showcasing Australia’s maritime heritage, all with one simple search.
The new collections join those from over 40 other Australian cultural institutions. Here are some examples of what you might be able to find in these new collections:
- State Library of Western Australia – ships, steamers, and ferries in Fremantle harbour;
- Picture Victoria – historic images of Murray River steamers, Warrnambool harbour, dockyards at Williamstown, Victorian lighthouses;
- Public Record Office of Victoria – including tall ships at Melbourne and rowing events in the 1956 Olympics; and
- Monash University Centre for Gippsland Studies – historic images of river activities at Bairnsdale, construction of bridges on the Bairnsdale-Orbost railway.
Picture Australia has also embarked on a exciting initiative to boost its contemporary images by partnering with Yahoo 7’s flickr. flickr is a global service for everyone to store and share their images on the web.
Some of the latest images to appear on Picture Australia via flickr include the 2006 commemorative voyage of the Duyfken 1606 Replica, contemporary views of shipwrecks, spectacular harbour scenery, lighthouses, and Australia Day boating events.
To share your sea, ship, and shore pictures with the world on PictureAustralia, simply log into flickr and upload them into one of our two pools: Picture Australia: Australia Day or PictureAustralia: people, places and events.
